3 steps to creating the perfect dining room
Modern dining rooms are multi-functional spaces where we come together to eat, entertain and spend time with family and friends, which means there’s plenty to consider when it comes to choosing furniture.
Our furniture buying director Victoria Jackson shares three simple steps to create the perfect dining room.
1. Think about space
To make sure you’re choosing the right furniture that meets your needs, consider the space you have available and how you use it. If you regularly have guests over for dinner or host family gatherings, for example, an extending table will come in handy. Our Heritage and Norfolk Oak dining sets have extending tables in a range of sizes, allowing you to easily accommodate any extra guests.
It might sound obvious, but you’ll also need to think about the size of your dining room – after all, there’s nothing worse than getting your new furniture home only to realise it doesn’t quite fit. Make sure you measure the space carefully before buying. If you’ve got an open-plan kitchen-diner, larger pieces such as our Heritage two-metre table can look really impressive. For smaller dining rooms, more slimline, ergonomically-designed furniture like our Coastal dining set can work well.
Space-saving furniture can also be useful – try benches that can be tucked away under the table or narrow cabinets and sideboards that take up less room while still providing extra storage.
2. Choose your preferred style
Whether you like a traditional look or something more contemporary, at Aldiss we offer a range of dining sets to suit all style preferences. Try to avoid buying furniture that’s ‘of the moment’ and instead choose something that suits your family’s needs and will stand the test of time. Our wooden dining furniture is a timeless choice, from the designer Ercol with elegant tapered legs and slender tabletops, to the rustic and relaxed Norfolk Oak dining set with antique brass handles. Marble, glass and high-gloss tabletops can also make a stylish addition to modern homes. For example, the Lazzaro dining table looks great in gloss. There are also kitchen-diners with a glass tabletop available in light grey or white and a choice of chairs and bar stools in eye-catching colours.
Our dining chairs come in a range of styles including ladder-back, slatted-back, cross-back and upholstered, which can complement both contemporary and traditional interiors. Don’t forget to consider practicality – wipeable leather or faux leather chairs may be more suitable for a young family, but you can always add a Staingard warranty to protect fabric chairs from spills.
3. Add the finishing touches with occasional furniture
The table and chairs may be the priority when furnishing a dining room, but you’ll also need to think about occasional furniture to bring your interior design scheme together. At Aldiss, we have a varied collection of side tables, coffee tables, wine racks, bookcases and plant stands to match our dining sets.
If you want to keep clutter to a minimum, most of our dining collections come with cupboards, sideboards and display cabinets in a variety of sizes for extra storage. The Heritage collection also has a handy shoe cupboard, larder unit and impressive drinks cabinet with a chopping board and mirror, perfect for when you’ve got guests round for dinner.
