3 steps to creating the perfect sleep sanctuary
Did you know that your bedroom can have a big impact on the quality of your sleep? From the window dressings to the quality of the bed linen, every detail makes a difference.
To help ensure you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day ahead, here are three steps to creating the perfect sleep sanctuary:
1) Make your bedroom comfortable and relaxing
A stuffy, bright and cluttered bedroom is guaranteed to stop you from getting a good night’s rest. To optimise your sleeping environment, there are a few features you should focus on:Temperature – To maintain the ideal sleeping temperature, make sure your bedroom is cool (18.3°C is about right, according to The Sleep Foundation) and maximise airflow under and around your bed. It’s also a good idea to change your duvet with the seasons to stop you from getting too hot or too cold at night – we recommend a 10.5 duvet tog for winter and a 4.5 tog for the warmer months.
Light - A dark room is crucial if you want to enjoy a sound sleep. Blackout blinds or curtains can shut out light from outside while also helping to regulate the temperature of the room. The blue light from TVs, phone screens and alarm clocks can also disturb your sleep, so it’s a good idea to try and turn off all electronic devices before you go to bed.
Tidiness – A clean and tidy bedroom can help you feel calm and relaxed, increasing your chances of nodding off. Clear away any clutter that could be contributing to stress or anxiety – clothes on the chair, shoes on the floor, messy surfaces – and make your bed in the morning so it feels more inviting.
2) Upgrade your bedding
No one’s going to sleep well with scratchy, thread-bare sheets, which is why it’s important to invest in high-quality ben linen. Everyone has their own personal preferences when it comes to bedding and you should choose something you find comfortable, whether it’s the cooling effect of cotton or the super-smooth feel of silk.
At Aldiss, we offer a range of bed linen and recommend visiting our stores to give our sheets and duvet covers the touch test. Some of our most popular brands include Belledorm, Laura Ashley, Joules and Morris & Co, all of which are renowned for their top-quality bedding.
Thread count is also worth considering – look for bed linen that’s rich in cotton, Egyptian or Supima cotton as these have extra soft and smooth blends.
3) Invest in a great mattress, and look after it
An old, sagging or lumpy mattress can cause pain and discomfort during the night-time, but it’s surprising how many of us put up with it. Investing in a decent mattress is one of the most worthwhile purchases when it comes to improving your sleep quality and wellbeing.
From pocket-sprung to foam, hybrid to adjustable, the best mattress for you will depend on your preferred sleeping style. We stock a variety of well-known brands in our Aldiss stores, including the popular Tempur and Emma mattresses, and recommend visiting us in person to find the perfect fit. It’s equally important to take good care of your mattress if you want to ensure long-lasting comfort. We advise changing your mattress every eight years, and to rotate and flip it regularly to avoid wear and tear. Buying a mattress protector is also a good idea to help keep it hygienic and prolong its life.
